Surendra Pandey is a standing committee member of of Nepal Communist Party (NCP). He represents Chitwan - 1 constituency in Federal Parliament of Nepal. He has also served as Finance Minister of Government of Nepal during Madhav Kumar Nepal led government in 2009 - 2011 . He was born on August 25, 1958 in Gajuri-8 of Dhading to Late Netra Raj Pandey and Man Maya Pandey and grew up in Chitwan.
Resident of Bhandara - 1 of Chitwan, Pandey, who is in the central leadership of UML since past two decades, commenced political career from the Coordination Centre in 1974. He was involved in underground politics for 10 years against autocratic party-less Panchayat System and has been imprisoned for 5 months. Pandey, elected to the National Council in 1999, was Constituent Assembly member in the first Constituent Assembly of 2008 on proportional representation. He had served as finance minister during the Madhav Kumar Nepal led government and is taken as a fair leader. His tenure as a finance minister is considered as a successful tenure. Pandey is specially known within CPN-UML for his contributions towards assisting the party in developing economic reform plans. His economic development ideologies have appeared in numerous platforms putting him in the forefront of CPN-UML's economic policy planners.
Beside these, he is also considered as an ideologue and also an effective leader during the dialogues / negotiations between the parties and during the crisis.
